Lavoy Don “Wasshop” Johnson

Lavoy Don “Wasshop” Johnson was born November 24, 1944, in Hobart, Oklahoma to parents Chris and Merle (White) Johnson, the youngest of eight children. Don grew up in Cooperton, Oklahoma and was baptized at 10 years old with a group of friends in Sugar Creek near Cooperton. Don graduated from Cooperton High School in 1964 and served in the US army from April 1965-1967, including a 13-month stay in Korea.

After leaving the service, Don married Linda Kauk on August 22, 1970. The couple had their only daughter Haley Ann (Johnson) Gilbert in April 1973, then moved to Cordell, Oklahoma later that year in November.

Don worked in road construction and built well sites. He retired from Sewell Brothers Construction in December in 2011. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and visiting with friends at the coffee shop. Don always had a story to tell which may or may not have been true and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his granddaughters.

Don died in his home on September 25, 2026 after one last trip to the coffee shop.

Don was preceded in death by parents Chris and Merle Johnson; brothers Weldon Johnson, Troy Wayne “Bud” Johnson, and Lloyd “Sonny” Johnson; sister Fern Haskins; brother-in-laws Jimmy Kauk and Larry Kauk; and sister-in-law Marilyn Thurman.

Don is survived by wife Linda Johnson of the home; daughter Haley (Johnson) Gilbert and husband Dakota Gilbert of Sayre, OK; granddaughters Sidney Spieker of Yukon, OK, Gabrielle Spieker and Madison Spieker of Weatherford, OK; sisters Wanda Simmons of Roosevelt, OK, Leta Baker of Lubbock, TX, and Loretta Lindsey of Claremore, OK; sisterin- laws Lavonne Kauk and Thelma Kauk of Leedey, OK; brotherin- law Randy Kauk of Cordell, OK and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

In Leui of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Veterans of Foreign War or the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
