Trial begins for former assistant principal after student shot teacher

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a former assistant principal in Virginia accused of ignoring warnings that a 6-year-old student brought a loaded gun to school that was later used to shoot his first grade teacher.

(AP) – Former Oklahoma death row prisoner Richard Glossip was released from incarceration for the first time in nearly 30 years after posting bond while awaiting retrial for a 1997 killing that put him on the brink of execution three separate times.

Thousands ordered to evacuate as wildfire threatens homes

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate Monday as a wind-driven wildfire threatened suburban homes in Southern California.The Sandy Fire was reported around 10 a.m. in hills above Simi Valley, about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
